Why you shold not join IBM India?

I know the moment you are reading the title, if you are an employee you will be nodding your head, and if you are planning to join it will be a eye opener for you. I have stayed in this company for nearly 40 months and thats a good amount of time to give a feedback if not neutral. If i will start writing i know i need a series to finish this off, but let me brief for today and will explain in detail. Thank god i am not in there anymore but still it hunt me in my dream.

Ok lets do the de-section of my experience starting from my interview to my exit (i never felt the elation of leaving a company as i had) which should normally be little awkward and emotional
considering the fact you wont get to come to the campus, meet your old friends and all that. Ok its hopefully Sep 2006 i had this interview. The manager, remember HR don't negotiate in IBM, its the manager. He told me several benifits of joining IBM which can be "trade off" of joining less than what i was getting earlier. lets mention it in bullet points

During Joining - Aug 2006
a) IBM provides unlimited training without any commitment or contract.
b) There is a concept of Unlimited Sick leave, can take as much as you can in certain health ground.
c) You can change the projects if not fitting to your profile or interest.
d) IBM will pay a Fixed+Variable>Current salary, though i asked him to put the variable part into the fixed part and he said the system doesn't allow us to do that. (IBM fixed sal was less than my that time current fixed salary)

During Exit - Jan 2010
a) IBM stopped free training. On need basis.
b) I don't know how many will fall into this category.
c) You need to complete 18 months in a project for you to legally eligible to switch to other project. Even after completion the source PM and destination PM should agree to make this movement possible. Might screw your appraisal (They call it as PBC) if you have shown ur caliber and source PM is not interested in leaving you.
d)My fixed remain fixed for 3 full term PBC and one partial PBC. 2 years i was told "I was getting more than the market standard". For someone who joined less than the earlier one, you can sense the desperation. The moment i heard the excuse i thought of slapping, and slap very hard (sorry there is no PM, its PeM who does the appraisal, might be a person who is no way related to you). When i show my agitation as usual the "bloody corporate lingo" comes into play. You should do this, that, to come to the limelight. I thought am i here to work for 9-5 or bloddy in a race to take the initiative.

This is the validation of what i was told and what has happened. Now come to the point why you should not join? IBM is NOT a company where you expect much of money. Yes if you are desperate for a change it could be used as a stop over or for them who cooked there resume little bit here and there for them as well. In case you have planned to join IBM and manage to squeeze IBM while joining, now rest assured after that its IBM turn. During my later days i was so restless of leaving the org. Each day i swipe in it feels like i am cheated in broad daylight. There is no one to address your issue. There is no point in shout as well. Unless you tell or spill those bad moments i am sure it would keep me hunting. Thanks to the technology that provide a nice platform to do so. OK. I know my shout can never go through there deaf ears. So during my last days was almost indifferent to whats happening around. Stopped attending the meeting, never care who says whatever. Tried to create my own rule without paying much of damn. But deep inside me the desperation was having a toll on me. Now when i look back i blame IBM for the negativism it added to my attitude. I was a free person all across, never change the company for money, nor for policy, but not with IBM where i have stayed for the longest. So all these experience comes with a price and pain, so use it judiciously.

Before i publish the series in detail two points the HR might not tell you while joining

1) when your performance is reviewed, at the end you have to accept with comments. There is no DECLINE option. His\her review is final.
2) Good for the married lady having school going kid, can settle there. I doubt whether they wish to grow, god save the asses of the pour souls working for them. Cheap Labor? Is that the reason why IBM does the "Women Drive" who are in a break in there career. To start afresh with kids going to school and can use the free time at IBM. Don't know though. Just guess.

Cheers
Ex-IBMer

  1. Good points about IBM..........

I also felt like that when appeared for interviews....Suppose you are getting 6 LPA.IBM will offer you same with brand name.....

What the hell we will do with the brand name..

IBM nevever become a brand bcoz of its name IBM...
Its employees have made it a brand in world...
If that brand will backstab the employees who made it no1 company in the world then FUCKOFF IBM.........

  2. "Abhi main zinda hoon.." nd so after serving a few more months than you.. it gives an

authority to me as well to put a few lines here...I hope you won't mind as my thoughts are

    sync with u...

Yes, I said ... "I quit!!!" before they gave me an excellence award for serving the company

for a hike of 500 Rs/month..nd that too after 5 years...

Yes, i agree with the most of the ppl who are reading this, that I am a waste...
Yes, I am waste... and the story all started when I was selected nd a few genuine candidates

    were rejected...

I realised my hidden energy .."aiy saala abhi abhi robaroo kind of thing"..

but it took me almost 5 years to realise that i was sailing in a wrong boat ...a few others

like the author were very fortunate to realise a bit earlier...

fortunate as they don't suffer for a 3 Rs price hike...

when it comes to boasting growth in dailies, they are the leaders but when it comes to

paying... they pay us as if they are running a charity in India...

I am happy that I am not a part of this charitable trust....

  3. Rs 3 price hike!!! "On demand" sounds a slang to me. Dude you are lucky. For someone pay was declared as Constant :)

  4. Same feeling.. Me and Amit joined IBM together but somehow i came out(becuase of luck than Effort).. As Rakesh Bhai said.. IBM good for "Married lady having school going Kids"

  5. Same in the feeling. M Enjoying the Onsite now. God knows what will happen after comming back. Need to think. For sure you can not survive with the IBM India Pay stuffs.

  6. I share the same feeling as Rakesh (in-fact shared the same client and assignment there in IBM) . Never had a second thought while quitting. Never felt so happy in my life, for any thing, while leaving it. Its not about work, as we joined the same client and still with them happliy.

IBM good for "Married lady having school going Kids"---- Ajit, Raku... you forgot the real people who enjoy IBM :) THE MANAGERS..........!!!!!
For IBM managers reading this.... don't feel bad abt it. We are few people who are just letting our PEND up feeling flow freely...

To quote the worst part where you get screwed..
IBM boast of 3 point contacts
    1,Project Manager 2,People Manager 3, Connection Advisor.
In my 38 months of experience I only interacted on a 5 min call with CA.
During this period I had 5 different PeM. These PeMs may be even at other end of the globe and may interact with you in a few mails.
What ever they boast, finally all will come to PM only to ask about you. And he can screw you up till the point you quit IBM. His feedback comes as a curse on you what ever assignments or dept you change there. Quitting is the only chance you have once you screw up. You feel so miserable there.

No comments on money part. I am one of the group who sacrifice better offers for the so called BRAND value. Those 2 sessions of year(so called PBC review) I have really felt like doing a massacre in the review meetings.

As Rakesh said, we might need pages to list out all these. We can title it “100 reasons not to join IBM India”. Last but not least. Recently met some guys who were working with IBM Singapore. During those talks only I learned a few bad words they use in Singapore. And they were using it often when they were talking about the company. So should we make the title “100 reasons not to join IBM” ??

  7. Not jus for married Ladies wid kids....Nice for managers too..:...But still I Love IBM...Am an IBMerrr...haha

  8. Well guys, I totally agree with you all. I have also gone through all this stuff. Would like to add a few points more

    1. Do not expect that you will be placed in the same location your offer letter shows. If you are in SAP expect yourself to be in KOLKATA sooner or later, which is the adda for politics in IBM. Especially regional politics.

    2. Though you get all the client appreciations and you have given 100+% to the project, do not expect rating more than "2" - SOLID CONTRIBUTOR.

    3. You can forget your pay hikes, even if you get that will be peanuts, enough to pay your tea bills, as IBM has removed vending machines 2 years ago.

    4. Your HR is your GOD. "AS GOD IS NEVER VISIBLE TO NAKED EYE"

Now I have put down my papers.

    1. I agree with you Shekar, There are so many politics even in Bangalore IBM. Only two communities are ruling IBM North Indians and Tamilians. These two communities are main culprits of spoiling the work culture in IBM. Especially if these people are in higher positions as Resource Deployment Manager(RDM) and Resource Capacity Manager (RCM) the condition is very worse. They did not care upon the performance of the employees who belongs from AP and Telangana region. They are the main responsible loosing jobs of employees who are from AP and Telangana region.

    1. My suggestion is do not join, work culture initially looks good. But when days are passing on you will definitely realize. There are so many politics in IBM. You cannot imagine. Even if you perform well in the project you assigned. Your efforts will go waste. Project Manager will not recognize your skills.

  13. I completely agree with you and I feel exactly same after 38 months and its time to be indifferent until I quit.

I want to ask a query, If you want to decline PBC rating, how to do that. Especially when it is done by some MCP at time of releasing from project after 3 years despite the fact that 2 previous ratings are 1 and 2+ followed by 3 now? Despite the fact that I have enough proofs for my hard work, 12 hours per day plus client and team appreactiaons and excellent ratings for changes delivered. But who would be ready to even listen??

Could you please guide what should I do, coz I do not even want to Leave pathetic IBM with last rating 3 (given by new PM who joined project in feb 2012, I am working for project for 3 years) which nobody can even justify if really they want to look into my quality deliveries, moreover i was never allowed any training or planned leaves throughout year 2012 being critical resource in small team and lots of work?

    2. congrats...how do we find who is our PAL. I dont want to ask this from PeM.?

    3. @preeti: this may be too late but this is how my PBC story went,

      1. I got a 2 rating while working onsite and my PM/PeM agreed that she did not take feedback from the onsite folk who knew my work. she took it from my offshore TL who was clueless. so I refused to accept the rating, put the reason in comments and saved it. I asked her to re evaluate with proper feedback. And asked her to send me the process to request re evaluation.

      2. Got asked to join a call with 1st and 2nd level manager. 2nd level said they did the rating after getting all feedback (which I later found was a lie as I checked with the onsite team and they confirmed no one called for feedback). I said this is contradicting what my PeM said and I cannot accept this rating. Said I can check with HR for the re evaluation process.

      3. Got pinged while on call with client and asked me to join a discussion (clearly this was more important than client!). This time had 3 levels of management and HR (nowadays each manager has an HR partner for advice. From what I hear, they usually work and take breaks together...if you get what I mean). 3rd level manager was shouting at me. I said calmly that this is incorrect eval and I need the process to change it. HR said process is online ( that's the only thing he said throughout the whole call). During this, 2nd level manager pinged me, turned off chat history and said my career will be affected (I took screenshots). Then they said if I don't accept, no bonus for anyone in my team. I gave up, updated all this in my comments and accepted the rating.

      4. Stayed onsite for some more time and made enough contacts there to help me settle. Will be moving there (Canada) soon. I quit last month.

  14. Guys, I am 18 months old in IBM and working as a manager. It has not been a great experience working here, I had joined from Accenture. There, I was happy doing my job and had an on site opportunity for 8 months. I had joined IBM because of brand .... I am sincerely requesting that one must not join a company only for Brand.... it has one of the worst working culture. As a manager, I end up working 18 to 20 hours as my teams work 24x5 ... IMAGINE !

Now I have an offer on hand from HGS ... thinking to make a switch, any suggestions?

  17. Firstly, I should thank Rakesh for having shown the courage by penning this. Actually, I've an offer in hand from IBM India (Bangalore) and am pretty worried to take the final call. I couldn't have stumbled upon this "wealth of grievances" at a better time :) I don't know what is it with these IBM managers but they somehow try to sell the IBM brand every time we come up with the salary discussion. Pathetic fellow during my PDM round tried to justify IBM's lesser offer (compensation) by saying that there are other people in his team who're getting less than what I've been offered and they don't seem to complain and more importantly they're happy and so it's taken for granted that I should accept it as well ... what crap !!! ... I just don't understand how IBM manages to get these fools on its rolls !!! ... And quite shamelessly enough that poor fellow tried to compensate the salary difference with the other advantages of working with IBM (read flexibility of work, enough training opportunities, innumerous leaves provided we have valid medical certificates :) and of course the IBM brand). I've heard that IBM has given no or paltry increments and no proper promotions over the past couple of years. Is this really true? I've replied to the offer letter email stating my expectations and asking for a revision of the salary. It's been 4 days now and not a single word from IBM on this. In fact, my previous emails asking for a proper explanation of the salary breakup has gone unanswered till date. It seems they just ignore all these emails and respond with limited details as per their whims. Really annoying and highly unprofessional behaviour !!! . Anyway, can someone help me understand the salary structure? There are basically 4 components: Basic, FBP, Retirals & Profit sharing. How should we calculate the monthly take-home amount?

  19. Hi Rakesh,
I agree with you. As one of my friends working in IBM also said that working in IBM is so hard. So I suggested him to move up on other's. But instead up on moving to other he decided to fly abroad and start working there in IBM with the other technology of IBM. I had suggested him to take training from one of the best online training institute for the IBM courses. He did so and now his package is 40lakhs (INR), So I suggest to everyone to do so.

    Thank you.

  23. IBM is not good even for "Married women having school going kid".
Coz i m one such women, still i m so dissatisfied here. After break, i joined ibm on even less salary and band that i left 2 years back. And then its been 1.5 years, there is no WFH for my project and i cant change project. My functional manager gave me RATING 2+ and my PeM reduced it to 2 with a promise of WFH. :(, bcoz he knws i have location constraints and my profile work is not much in this location.

Alas, That was a fake PROMISE. And now, i want to leave the project after 1.5 years, they say they will promote me.This is another fake promise.

    I simply hate u IBM.

NO GROWTH, NO QUALITY WORK, NO SATISFACTION, NO TRUTH

And 3 months notice period, eew :(.

Hopefully, i will leave IBM ASAP.

  26. I have been working for IBM from past 2.5 years. I got the Managers choice award, wall of fame etc. Got pbc rating 2+, no salary hike no band change even after 2 years. People who got less rating than me got hike ( very less) i questioned y i did not receive it,the answer they gave me is ur PMR is already high. Nonsense, all my hardwork gone in vain. My manager changed and the new manager was so irritating, he started playing dirty politics within the team.

We were warned not to claim food allowance when we worked on an IBM holiday. Though we worked for 12 hours he did not allow us to clock 12 hours in ilc. If we do not clock we can not claim over time. IBM says open door policy etc etc but end of the day only manager will win though it's his mistake. My sme proposed me and i rejected so he started targeting me. Putting more pressure on me at work. I told him I'll raise harrasment complaint and he told nothing will work as IBM needs artifacts for everything. Idiotic people like him torture women and they will B careful to do it without artifacts. I told this to my manager, i was surprised that he supported my some saying that he can not take action with out artifacts. Finally was not able to take their torture and i resigned IBM ,i still have to work 90 days. I know every single day is going to be a pain
